The α-particles emitted by radioactive substances produce ionization of air or gas molecules , radioactive sources can therefore be detected by using a pulse electroscope . To demonstrate the emission of α-particles , a week radium source is taken out of its container using a lifting tool , and clamped on R by the handle . The potential of the side electrode is made


+2 kV , and then – 1.5 kV , and the leaf is observed to beat at a faster rate on each occasion ; thus showing that the α-particles emitted by the radium source produce both positive and negative ions in air .
